How to make Valentine’s Day cookies

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than by creating some beautifully decorated cookies with our Valentine’s Day cookie cutters? Whether you're looking to surprise your loved ones or simply indulge in some sweet treats, this fun and creative activity is bound to put a smile on everyone's face.

To start off, gather all your Valentine's Day-themed cookie cutters. Hearts, teddy bears, and chocolate boxes are just a few examples of adorable Valentine’s Day cookies. If you don't have any themed cutters, you can even use basic shapes like circles and rectangles and decorate them with love-inspired designs. We offer those here

Next, whip up a batch of your favorite sugar cookie dough. Roll it out between two sheets of parchment paper to an even thickness, ensuring that it is not too thin or too thick. I like to use our 8mm rolling guides that fit the Joseph Joseph rolling pin. Now, it's time to put those cookie cutters to work. Press each one firmly into the dough, creating beautiful shapes that will form the base for your Valentine's Day cookies.

Once you have cut out your cookies, carefully peel them off the parchment and transfer them onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a mesh baking mat, which can help limit spread. Remember to leave some space between each cookie to prevent them from sticking together during baking. Pop them in the oven and let them bake until they turn a light golden brown around the edges and are no longer shiny in the centre. The delightful aroma filling your kitchen is bound to make you even more excited for the decorating process!

While your cookies cool down, prepare your icing. You can opt for a simple glaze icing, which is easy to make using powdered sugar, water, and a touch of vanilla extract. Divide the icing into different bowls and add food coloring to create various shades of pink, red, and purple. This will give your cookies a vibrant and eye-catching appearance.

Once your cookies have cooled completely, it's time to let your creativity shine. Use a piping bag or a small food-safe brush to apply the icing onto the cookies, creating intricate designs. You can go for a classic approach, such as outlining the shapes and flooding the inside, or experiment with different patterns and techniques like marbling or using stencils. Add some sprinkles, edible glitter, or tiny heart-shaped candies to add extra detail to your creations.

As you decorate, let your imagination run wild. I like to search for designs on Instagram or Pinterest to get ideas. Personalize your cookies with initials, love messages, or even recreate famous love quotes. The possibilities are endless, and the joy of creating personalized treats for your loved ones is truly priceless.

Once you've finished decorating, allow the icing to dry completely before packaging or indulging in these delectable delights
